Carlowrie – your new flexible friend
27th March 2019After the rigours of the festive season we started the year at Carlowrie with our first yoga retreat, joined by a select few from around Scotland on the mats in the Orangery. A luxury weekend of spiritual development and higher consciousness, not to mention fine healthy food and drinks with guidance, massage and therapies provided by our expert partners at Sonoyoga.
It proved the perfect setting, a world away from the bustle of daily life, and an inspiring start to 2019. However wellbeing is not just for Christmas, so if you are interested in a wellness retreat, or even just a session or package to add in to your own event at Carlowrie, please get in touch.
Striving for egg-sellence.
12th December 2018We are delighted to introduce our latest residents at the castle – 6 beautiful hens. The girls arrived at the weekend, and are settling into their coop and paddock at the far end of the walled garden. We have already had a couple of batches of eggs to sample for our breakfasts – there really is nothing like a free range egg straight from the chicken!
Our ladies are part of our continuing efforts to be more self-sufficient, and grow our ‘farm to fork’ policy. Our philosophy has always been ‘don’t bite the land that feeds you’ and we seek to minimise our environmental impact in every aspect of the business. From our biomass boilers fed with local wood chips that heat the castle, to our tree planting programme through the Woodland Trust. We source everything locally as far as possible for our menus, our excellent maintenance team repair before renewing.
Our head chef Iain has been working with Andrew our Gardener on ways that the castle can honour its strong botanical history (see Isobel Wylie Hutchison) and further introduce home grown produce through for catering. We already use herbs and botanicals grown in our restored Victorian hothouses, and have a planting schedule for the upcoming seasons to grow more of our own fruit and veg.
Our chickens don’t have to worry however – it’s only the eggs we’re after!
Launching the Carlowrie Gate Lodge
15th November 2018Our bed stock has just increased and we couldn’t be more delighted with the finished product. The Gate Lodge sits nestled within the Carlowrie Estate, with private access and all the comforts (and some) you would expect from a home from home.
There are three luxurious double bedrooms on the ground floor and two perfectly cosy smaller doubles on the upper level, ideal size for children. Both of the private bathrooms are situated on the ground floor as well as a fully fitted modern kitchen with an ample sized dining table for family and friends to gather around. The lounge area is the ideal space to kick back and relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Carlowrie Estate.
Bookings for the Gate Lodge can be made separately to the Castle, and our diary is now open and starting to fill, so whether it’s a weekend treat or midweek retreat for yourself, friends and loved ones let us know, contact us now for availability and prices. We look forward to welcoming you to the Carlowrie Gate Lodge!
Carlowrie Castle. Saving the planet, one tree at a time!
02nd September 2018The Carlowrie Estate is being transformed. Our 32 acres will soon be the home of thousands of new trees and plants as we embark on an ambitious carbon offsetting program.
The plan will enrich the estate with a diverse wealth of tree stock including statement trees such as Monkey Puzzle Trees and Birches, more formal trees such as bay and olive, and enchanting soft fruit trees. Smaller and more manicured varieties of tree will be planted closer to the castle building.
The trees will not only serve an important environmental purpose but also an aesthetic and edible one too. Soon you will be able to walk up to the front door in a haze of lavender and admire creative topiary in the walled garden. You will also be able to enjoy the (literal) fruits of our labours during your stay, not to mention exceptional photo opportunities in front of our fruit trees, whether they are in delicate blossom or laden with fruit.
Given that the castle’s former and illustrious owners include a renowned botanist, Isobel Wylie Hutchison, and Robert Hutchison, an expert in arboriculture, this project is a wonderful opportunity to plant for the future while honouring the past.

Additional accommodation coming soon!
09th May 2018Following an extensive renovation, the gate lodge at Carlowrie Castle is finally coming together. We are also going in for planning for 8 double bedrooms in our stable block, seen in the photo.
Like all good Scottish estates, Carlowrie comes with its fair share of outbuildings, some large, some small, some contemporary, some later additions. Set a few minutes’ stroll from the castle, the lodge has privacy, the luxurious interiors you would expect from a Carlowrie property, and architectural significance, having been designed by the same prestigious architect as the castle, all rolled up into a spacious yet cosy chocolate-box-perfect lodge.
The lodge comprises three double bedrooms and two smaller rooms ideal for children, with a large communal area and kitchen facilities. It marks a substantial increase in the accommodation capacity of the castle.
The gate lodge will be ready to welcome its first guests in September.
